TermDefinition
Atom The smallest source of matter that still has identifiable elements. The building blocks of everything.
Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down by normal means.
Molecule A group of atoms that were bonded together.
Chemical Compound A group of molecules bonded together.
Atomic Number The identifying number that identifies the number of protons found in an element. Found in the period table.
Mass Number The total number of protons and neutrons found in an atom. Found in the periodic table.
Atomic Weight Another term for Atomic Mass.
Valence Electron Electrons found in the outermost shell of an atom.
Electron A subatomic particle in Atoms with a negative charge. So small, its mass is almost 0.
Proton A subatomic particle in atoms with a positive charge. Has identifiable mass.
Neutron A subatomic particle in atoms with no charge. Has identifiable mass.
Isotope A variation of a chemical element that has a different neutron number.
Radioisotope An isotope that's radioactive.
Electron Configuration The distribution of electrons in the Electron Shells of an atom.
Bond A long lasting bond between atoms that form compounds.
Polar Bond A type of bond between two atoms where electrons are shared unequally.
Non Polar Bond A type of bond between two atoms where electrons are shared equally.
Hydrogen Bond A weak bond between a hydrogen atom and a negatively charged atom. Gives water its weird properties.
Solvent A substance that can dissolve other substances.
Solution A liquid mixture where a minor component uniformly mixes with the major component.
Solute The substance that dissolves in a solvent.
Hydrophobic Something that repels water.
Hydrophillic Something that gets wet because of water.
Amino Acid A group of organic compounds that contain amine and carboxyl groups. Make up protein.
Nucleotide A group of organic molecules made up of a nucleosides and a phosphate. Make up Nucleic Acids.
Peptide Bond A type of bond that bonds together amino acids.
Lipid A type of biochemical that consists of fats, oils, and waxe
Saturated Fat A type of fat that is solid at room temperature. Has many fatty acid molecules.
Saccharide An organic compound that contains sugars.
Specific Heat (Water) The amount of heat needed to raise one gram of a substance by 1 degree celsius. Allows life to thrive.
