Landform Vocabulary
Term | Definition |

Stream | Natural bodies of running water that flow on or under the earth. |
Delta | Low plains that form where rivers enter oceans. |
Floodplain | Nearly flat plains along the paths of streams or rivers. |
Hill | Natural elevations of the earth's surface that are smaller than mountains. Less than 2000 ft above sea level. |
Mountain/Mountain Range | Natural elevations of the earth's surface. They rise to summits. which are greater than 2000 feet above sea level. |
Valley | Long, narrow regions of low land between ranges of mountains or hills. |
Sinkhole | Form when land above weathered surface rocks sinks leaving behind holes in the ground . |
Cave | Typically underground, hollow areas created by weathering and or erosion. |
Canyon | Deep valleys with steep sides. |
Glacier | Huge mass of ice formed from snow falling and accumulating over time. They flow very slowly over landmasses. |
Dune | Sand hills or sand ridges formed by wind, usually located in desert regions or near lakes and flooding. |
Spring | Natural outflows of groundwater. |
Volcano | Openings, called vents, in the earth's crust through which hot ash, steam, gases and molten rock or lava escape from deep inside Earth. Located on hills or mountains. |
Island | Areas of land surrounded by water. |
