Scientific Method Vocabulary

science knowledge gained by observing the natural world
variable anything that can be changed during an experiment
analysis data is examined in order to determine what has been discovered or learned
experiment scientific procedure that helps gather information in a controlled environment
hypothesis background knowledge and research help you make a prediction as to what will happen in the experiment
result data collected during the experiment
independent variable the variable that is changed in an experiment in order to affect the unchanged variable
observation using your senses to gather information
purpose the reason for conducting an experiment
physical model look and/or act like the real thing
data factual information that is analyzed
mathematical model made up of mathematical equations and data
dependent variable part of the experiment that is affected by the changed variable
constant a variable that is not changed
research gathering information from reliable written sources
conceptual model some are systems or ideas, others are based on making comparisons with familiar things to help illustrate or explain an idea
scientific method a way in which scientists answer questions and solve problems
conclusion summarizing what has been learned from the results of the experiments
controlled variable a constant variable that is not being tested, it remains the same and is used to compare
question a step where focus or purpose of the experiment
procedure series of steps for completing an experiment in the scientific method
