| nucleus | directs the cell's activities. |
| organelle | differentiated structure within a cell that performs a specific function. |
| Cytoplasm | Fluid that surrounds the organelles |
| Mitochondria | Converts energy from food into energy a cell can use |
| Organ | A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions |
| Organ System | A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function or group of functions |
| Tissue | A group of cells in an organism that have similar structure and function |
| Vacuole | Storage area for cells; water storage in plants |
| Robert Hooke | used to word cell in 1665; looked at a thin slice of cork (plant cell) under the microscope. |
| Heterotrophs | consumers; cannot make their own food; must consume other living organisms. |
| Autotrophs | producers; make their own food |
| cyclosis | the movement of materials inside a cell. |
| respiration | breaking down glucose into simpler substances and releasing the stored energy in a form the cell can use. |
| biosynthesis | using the energy from foods to form new cell parts, as in growth and repair. |
| excretion | the removal of liquid waste from the cell. |
