nucleus directs the cell's activities.
organelle differentiated structure within a cell that performs a specific function.
Cytoplasm Fluid that surrounds the organelles
Mitochondria Converts energy from food into energy a cell can use
Organ A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions
Organ System A group of organs that work together to perform a specific function or group of functions
Tissue A group of cells in an organism that have similar structure and function
Vacuole Storage area for cells; water storage in plants
Robert Hooke used to word cell in 1665; looked at a thin slice of cork (plant cell) under the microscope.
Heterotrophs consumers; cannot make their own food; must consume other living organisms.
Autotrophs producers; make their own food
cyclosis the movement of materials inside a cell.
respiration breaking down glucose into simpler substances and releasing the stored energy in a form the cell can use.
biosynthesis using the energy from foods to form new cell parts, as in growth and repair.
excretion the removal of liquid waste from the cell.
