element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical changes. An element consists of atoms of only one type.
atom the smallest particle of an element that has the chemical properties of that element.
nucleus the center of an atom, which contains protons and neutrons.
chemical symbol an abbreviation or short version (1-2 letters) of a chemical element.
atomic number the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
pure substance an element or compound that cannot be separated into any other kinds of matter by any physical or chemical process.
Bond A connection between atoms that are joined together to form a molecule.
Electron A particle that is part of an atom and that orbits the nucleus; it has a negative electrical charge.
Neutron A particle in the nucleus of an atom that has no electrical charge.
Proton One of the tiny particles that make up the nucleus of an atom; it has a positive electrical charge.
Molecule The smallest part of a substance that can exist by itself, made of two or more atoms.
Compound A pure substance made by chemically combining two or more elements.
Chemical Formula A representation of a substance (compound) in which the elements are represented by their symbols and subscripts represent the number of atoms of each element.
Physical Change Change which alters the physical properties of a substance without changing its identity.
Chemical Change The formation of a new substance with different properties; cannot be undone by physical means.
Subscript The number written to the right and slightly below an element in a chemical formula; represents the number of atoms of an element present in a chemical formula.
