| Fire Blanket | Safety equipment made of specially treated, fire-resistant fabric and used to smother fires; place over the person and pat out the fire while another person informs the teacher of the issue |

| When should you wear goggles? | whenever chemicals, heat and/or glassware are used |
| How should chipped or broken glassware be handled? | l tell the teacher and use broom/dust pan to handle broken glass and then dispose of cracked, chipped, or broken glass in a broken glass box-- never dispose of broken glass in a regular trash can as this can cause cuts to the person emptying the bin |
| How should chemicals be disposed of at the lab's conclusion? | always ask teacher for disposal directions if they are not provided in the lab; solid chemicals, metals, matches are to be placed in proper waste container as designated by the teacher |
| What does "dressing for safety" for lab days mean? | long pants (covering ankles), closed-toe shoes with shoulder-length hair tied back; dangling jewelry, loose or baggy clothing must be secured; goggles should be worn at all times |
| What do you do if something goes wrong in the lab or there is an accident? | always tell the teacher first and foremost; if someone needs the eye wash, safety shower, fire extinguisher and/or fire blank go take care of that while the lab partner informs the teacher of the accident |
| What should you always do when finished working in the lab? | dispose of chemicals as directed by the teacher, clean and organize equipment and lab bench, wash hands |
| When should you eat or drink in the lab? ! | NEVER EVER EVER -- you should not even have a water bottle at the lab bench on lab day or unopened food. NO food or drink in the lab on lab days! |
| What is wafting? | the proper way to fan fumes toward the nose to detect odors |
| How should water and acid be mixed? | _Always add acid to water |
| Should lab stools be used on lab days? | No!! Lab stools are for sitting and taking notes on a non-lab day. Sitting on a lab stool during a lab makes it difficult for you to move out of the way should a spill occur |
| Should any chemicals be consumed in the lab? | No!! Never ever taste anything from lab (unless instructed to do so by the teacher) as we want to avoid contamination. |
| When should you work alone in the lab? | Never work alone! You always need a partner to help you carry out the procedure and for safety issues! If there is an accident, one person should tell the teacher while the other person tends to the spill or broken glassware. |
| Should your lab station ever be unattended? | No! Make sure to always have someone watching your station to ensure open flames don't get out of control and to ensure nothing is contaminated by another lab group. |
| Is it okay to put goggles on your forehead for just a minute to unfog them? | No! If you need to unfog your goggles, step into the hall where there are no chemicals/glassware. NEVER remove goggles until after you've washed your hands at the lab's conclusion. |
| How many people should work together in lab? | At least two people should work together in a lab. Never work alone! |
| How long should eyes be rinsed in the eye wash if chemicals are in the eye? | Rinse for a minimum of 15-20 minutes |
