Genetics: Quiz 9

Genetics: Cells

QuestionAnswer
What is DNA? A type of nucleic acid that contains the genetic information of organisms (Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid)
Nucleic Acids Molecules that are polymers
Polymers Molecules with repeating parts called monomers
What is DNA made of? Nucleotides, which have sugars, phosphate, and 4 nitrogenous bases: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, and Guanine
Chargaff's Rule When DNA is analyzed, the amount of A=T & C=G
Rosaline Franklin X-ray crystallographer, chemist, discovered that DNA is a double helix, the "backbones are equally distanced, the two halves are symmetrical
James Watson & Francis Crick Wanted to discover the structure of DNA, how it replicated, and how it represented genetic information
DNA replication Enzymes break apart the DNA polymerates and the new nucleotides assemble from the cell
DNA represents genetic information The sequence of bases codes for genetic information
Organic Molecules Essentials to cells: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Sulfur
Carbohydrates CHO, polysaccharide (complex sugar) or monosaccharide (simple sugar), structure and energy
Nucleic Acids CHONP, nucleotides, DNA, genetic material
Proteins CHONS, polypeptide, Amino Acid, hemoglobin, hormones, structure, enzymes
Lipids CHO, steroids, phospholipids, fatty acids, energy, structure, hormones
Vacuole Stores materials in the cell (water, salt, protein, carbohydrates)
Mitochondria Makes compounds out of chemical energy from food, so it is easier for the cell to use (not found in prokaryotes)
Chloroplast Captures energy from sunlight and makes it into chemical energy (found only in prokaryotes and plants)
Smooth/Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum Fat molecules are assembled here/Synthesize proteins (Found in fungus and plants)/(Found in fungus, plants, and animals)
Lysosomes Have enzymes and help to clean the cells, recycling the lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates (Not found in prokaryotes)
Golgi apparatus Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and other materials from the endoplasmic reticulum so they can be stored in the cell or secreted outside the cell (not found in prokaryotes)
All cells have ribosomes and cell membranes
Organelles that contain DNA in eukaryotic cells Nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplast

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
