Physical & Chemical Changes

TermDefinition
Chemical Change A change that alters the chemical composition of a material. Ex: Digestion (carbohydrates breaking down into sugar)
Physical Change A change in the appearance of a material with no change to its chemical composition. Ex: Phase Change (water boiling)
Phase Change a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition.
Atoms The smallest unit of matter Ex: Carbon Atom
Melting A phase change from the solid state to the liquid state. Ex: Mercury melts at -38 degrees Fahrenheit
Boiling Point Temperature at which evaporation & condensation occur. A physical property of a substance. Ex: 100 degrees Celsius for water
Freezing A phase change from the liquid state to the solid state. A physical change.
Physical Properties properties that can be observed without a changing the substance. Ex: Density Boiling Point
Density The amount of mass present in a given volume. A reflection of how tightly packed the atoms are.
Periodic Table A chart of the elements, organized by physical & chemical properties of the different types of atoms.
Gas Production The formation of a gas is often an indication of a chemical change. Ex: Mixing vinegar & baking soda yields carbon dioxide.
Solid Formation A solid product can provide evidence of a chemical change. Ex: Rust that forms on metal
Color Change A sign that a chemical or physical change has occurred.
Temperature Change A sign that a chemical or physical change has occurred.
Condensation A physical change. A gas turns into a liquid.
Evaporation A physical change. A change from the liquid state to the gas state, but is still water; it has not changed into any other substance.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
