| Observing | Using your five senses to gather information about the world around you. |
| Qualitative Observations ,Think of QUALITY | observations made using your five senses. |
| Quantitative ,Think of quantity | Observations that are based on measurements. |
| Inferences, | To explain or interpret an observation using previous experience. |
| Predictions | Making an inference about a FUTURE event based on evidence or past experience. |
| The X axis | Also known as the horizontal axis on a graph. |
| The Y axis | Also known as the vertical axis on a graph. |
| Independent Variable | The one variable that is purposely changed in the test by the investigator during an experiment. |
| Controlled Variable | The variables that are kept the same or constant in an experiment. |
| Dependent Variable | The variables that is a result of the independent variable. (you find out at the END). What you are measuring |
| Uncontrolled Variable | Something you did not anticipate or think would happen OR an human error |
| Hypothesis | A prediction that must be testable. (includes if and then) |
| Data Table | A way to organize data into two columns with independent variable always on the left and dependent variable always on the right. |
| Line Graph | "A type of graph that is used when data takes place over time, such as population changes or a person's growth." |
| Bar Graph | "A graph that is used for descriptive data, such as car colors. (comparing/contrasting data)" |
| Increments | "When numbering a graph, the numbers you choose to best show your data. |
| Range | The numbers that are between the highest and lowest numbers in the data set. |
| Metric System | "The system of measurements that is used by all Scientists. (based on the number 10, so it is easy to convert units)" |
| problem | A question to be considered, solved or answered. |
| observation | The act of noting and recording something with instruments. |
| hypothesis | An testable statement you believe is the answer to the problem. |
| experiment | A test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth, or examine the validity of a hypothesis. |
| conclusion | The result or outcome of an act or process. |
| theory | Something that is believed to be true based on limited information or knowledge. |
| variable | Something that changes. |
| inquiry | A close examination of something in the hopes of finding the truth. |
| scientific method | A process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. |
| evaluate | To examine or judge carefully |
| vary | To change or be inconsistent |
| resources | Things that can be used for support or help. |
| scientific theory | well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations and experiments |
| scientific law | statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time, under a particular set of conditions |
