Light Lets us see things -- we cannot see things without this
Straight lines Light travels this way
Transparent Light passes through these objects
Opaque Light cannot pass through these objects
Shadows Formed when light shines on opaque objects
Reflection The process of light being thrown back from a surface
Light reflected on a smooth surface Light is reflected regularly
Plane mirrors Flat and smooth surface - Laterally Inverted image - Same size as object
Convex mirrors Laterally Inverted image - Smaller size than the object. A broader view than a regular mirror.
Laterally inverted The left side of something becomes right side and vice versa -- an image is 'mirrored'
Applications of Convex Mirrors Periscopes on buses, security mirrors, rear view mirrors on vehicles,...
illusion Something that seems to be different from the way it really is. eg. a bent chopstick in water
Refraction When light changes it direction when passing through a medium -- refraction causes bending and also the splitting of light in a triangular prism
Applications of Refraction Magnifying glasses, glasses, microscope
Colours of the Rainbow 7 colours (ROYGBIV) - Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Triangular Prism Splits white light / sunlight into the 7 colours of the rainbow.
Spinning Circular Rainbow Plate Spinning a rainbow plate will make the wheel appear white.
AFTER rain water droplets act like triangular prisms to form a rainbow.
