What is cystic fibrosis Chromosomal abnormality leading to dysfunction of exocrine glands. Affects primarily lungs, pancreas, and sweat glands
What leads to most of the clinical manifestations? mechanical obstruction due to thick mucus secretions
What are the pulmonary effects? broncial and bronciolar obstruction by thick mucus, leading to atelectasis and reduced area for gas exchange
Thick mucus in the pulmonary system can lead to _______? bacterial growth and increased risk of infection of respiratory tract
What are the pancreatic effects? decreased absorption of nutrients due to obstruction of pancreatic ducts and lack of adequate enzymes for digestion
What impact does it have on sweat glands? excess excretion of sodium and chloride
