| Term | Definition |

| Enteral | Absorbed through mucosa of stomach/intestine. E.g. PO route |
| Parental | Injection (IV, IM, ID, SC) |
| Topical | -Applied to various surfaces such as skin, eyes, ears, nose, lungs, rectum, vagina |
| Tablet | -Powdered med, compressed into hard disk. -Often scored so half a med can be given |
| Capsule | Med encased in a gelatin shell -Often designed for sustained/extended release |
| Enteric coated | -Coated so they do NOT break down in the stomach -Absorption takes place in the small intestine -Can't be divided into smaller doses |
| Chewable tablet | -Used for kids/pts with difficulty swallowing a pill -Break down starts in the mouth |
| Sublingual tablets | -Put under the tongue -E.g. NTG a drug used to reduce chest pain |
| Liquids/Elixers/Syrups | -Already dissolved -Usually absorbed more quickly than solid dosage forms |
| Injections | ID, IM, SC, IV |
| Intradermal (ID) | Injection into the dermis, just below the dermis |
| Subcutaneous (SC) | Injection into the fat layer, just below the skin |
| Intramuscular (IM) | Injection into the deep muscle of buttocks, thighs, or upper arm |
| Intravenous (IV) | -Injection directly into a vein -Medication is delivered right into the blood stream, it is distributed w/ blood throughout the body |
| Transdermal (patches) | -Adhesive patches -Pain control, NTG, birth control patches, nicotine patches |
| Drops | For eyes (gtts) / ears |
| Rectal suppositories (PR) | -Good option to give if pt is: vomiting, can't swallow, or for infants w/ fever/pain meds |
| Inhaler | -A canister containing med in aerosol form -Med is pumped out and delivered directly to the lungs -Most common use is to treat asthma |
