Core expressive techniques terminology for Music 1 students
| Term | Definition |

| crescendo | (cresc.) gradually get louder |
| decrescendo | (decresc.) gradually get softer |
| accelerando | (accel.) gradually getting faster |
| ritardando | (rit.) gradually getting slower |
| rubato | freedom of time – no strict pulse – makes the music sound more expressive |
| legato | played smoothly and well connected – slurred (in one bow stroke or in one breath, no articulation) |
| staccato | played short and detached/separated |
| glissando | sliding from one note to another (stringed instrument, voice, trombone, piano, glockenspiel/xylophone etc) |
| double stopping | playing two notes at once on a violin, viola, cello or double bass |
| falsetto | sung at a higher pitch than the natural range – usually by male voice |
| vibrato | ‘wobbling’ of the pitch, makes it sound warmer |
| pizzicato | (pizz) plucking the string – opposite to using the bow (arco) – only done on a violin, viola, cello or double bass. |
| mute/muting | using a device to dampen the vibrations/sound |
