dermatitis venenata Allergic reaction to certain cosmetics or chemicals; the skin becomes red sore or inflamed after direct contact with the substance sometimes referred to as contact dermatitis
Hyperpigmentation Pigmentation that occurs as a result of variables such as over exposure to UV rays, acne injuries to the skin, hormones or other external factors
Allergy Sensitivity that may develop from contact with normally harmless substances symptoms of an allergy may include itching redness swelling and/or blisters
Inflammation An objective symptom characterized by redness, pain, swelling and/or increased temperature
chronic Condition that is frequent and habitual
acute A term used to identify conditions that are brief and severe
contagious disease Communicable by contact also known as infectious or communicable disease
seasonal disease Disease influenced by the weather
etiology The study of the cause of a disease disorder or condition
Pathology The study of a disease
Macules Discolouration appearing on the skin surface;a freckle
Freckle Discolouration on the skin surface commonly found on the face neck and chest
Vesicles Fluid filled elevations in the skin caused by localized accumulation of fluids or blood just below the epidermis
Herpes Simplex Contagious chronic condition characterized by a single vesicle or a group of vesicles on a red swollen base
Bulla Lesion like a vesicle but larger found above and below the skin; contains a clear watery fluid
Papules Hardened red elevations of the skin in which no fluid is present; a pimple
Pustules Small elevations of skin similar to vesicles and size and shape but containing pus; a pimple with pus
Wheals A solid formation above the skin often caused by an insect bite or allergic reaction; hives, also called uticaria
tumors Solid masses and the skin May be soft or hard, may be fixed or freely movable, generally have a rounded shape; a nodule
Nodule a small tumor
Scales Shedding dead cells of the uppermost layer of the epidermis
Psoriasis Round dry patches of skin covered with rough silvery scales; condition is chronic and not contagious
crusts Dried masses that are the remains of an oozing sore or scab on a sore
excoriations Mechanical abrasions or injuries to the epidermis i.e. Scratches to the surface of the skin
Fissures Cracks in the skin I eat chopped lips
scars Formations resulting from a lesion which extend into the dermal layer or deeper as part of the normal healing process; keloids are thick scars
Ulcers Open lesions visible on the skin surface that may result in the loss of portions of the dermal layer and be accompanied by pus
hypertrophies New growths overgrowths excesses of the skin
Callus Sometimes called hyperkeratosis or keratoma; thickening of the epidermis which occurs from pressure and friction applied to the skin
Verruca Name given to a variety of warts
skin tags Small elevated growths of skin
melanoderma Any hyper pigmentation caused by overactivity of the melanocytes in the epidermis
Chloasma Group of brownish macules; non-elevated spots occurring in one place on the skin; commonly called liver spots; often occurs on the hands and face
moles Small Brown pigment spots that may be raised; hair often grows through moles but should not be removed unless advised by a physician
naevus/nevus Birthmark or a congenital mole; reddish purple flat mark caused by dilation of the small blood vessels in the skin
tinea The medical term for ring worm; contagious fungal disease characterized by a red circular patch of blisters caused by a fungal vegetable parasite
Conjunctivitis Referred to as pink eye and inflammation of the transparent membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball; characterized by itching and redness; spreads easily
pseudofolliculitis barbae Medical term for razor bumps or irritation following shaving
leukoderma Describes hypopigmentation; lack of pigmentation of the skin caused by a decrease in activity of melanocytes
albinism Congenital failure of the skin to produce melanin pigment
vitiligo Characterized by oval or irregular patches of white skin that do not have normal pigment
Comedones Small bumps frequently found on the forehead and chin; associated with acne; open comedones are blackheads, closed comedones are white heads
milia Pearly white and closed keratin filled cysts filled with sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria which form a hard ball beneath the outer layer of the skin
acne Genetic disease that occurs most often on the face, back and chest and is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the sebaceous glands
Rosacea Chronic inflammatory congestion of the cheeks and nose observed as redness with papules and sometimes pustules present also called acne rosacea
Asteatosis Condition of dry scaly skin with reduced sebum production
seborrhea A common skin rash with redness and scaly pinkish yellow patches that have an oily appearance usually affects the scalp
Steatoma Sebaceous cyst or wen; a subcutaneous tumor of the sebaceous gland filled with sebum
Furuncles Boils; appear in the dermal layer and epidermis and are caused by an acute bacterial infection
carbuncles Clusters of furuncles caused by an acute bacterial infection of several adjoining hair follicles
bromidrosis A medical condition characterized by an unpleasant odor from the skin
anhidrosis The inability to sweat normally, over exposure to the Sun, or a high fever due to illness can lead to serious illness or heat stroke
Dermatitis Inflammatory disorder of the skin
Eczema Characterized by dry or moist lesions with inflammation of the skin; requires medical attention
impetigo Highly contagious bacterial infection that produces a honey yellow crusted lesion usually on the face
folliculitis Infection in the hair follicles caused by bacteria shaving or clothing irritation. It usually looks like a red pimple with a hair in the center
