Altered Nutrition

TermDefinition
Active transport Energy-dependent transport of particles across the cell membrane against a gradient
Absorption A complex process of taking in nutrients and move these to the circulation to be used by cells
Anemia The reduction in the mass of circulating blood cells and subsequently reduced hemoglobin levels
Anorexia nervosa An eating disorder characterized by a refusal to maintain a minimally healthy body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, body image distortion and amenorrhea
Bioavailability Refers to a mineral that is unbound and must remain unbound (Also called an ionic state) to be absorbed
Body mass index (BMI) A measure of body fat calculated measuring weight in kilograms and dividing this by height in meters squared
Celiac disease Also called gluten-sensitive enteropathy; a disorder of gluten malabsorption caused by a T-cell-mediated hypersensitivity to gluten in person who are genetically predisposed to developing this condition

Cheilitis A problem with fissure development in the corners of the mouth often associated with riboflavin deficiency
Digestion The process by which food is broken down mechanically and chemically in the gastrointestinal tract and converted into absorbable components
Energy The capacity to do work
Essential fat A lipid required for physiologic functioning
Essential nutrients Those that must be consumed regularly in the diet, because the body is unable to synthesize the nutrient in dquantities sufficient to meet its needs
Glutens Specific proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley
Hypochromic Indicates pale red blood cells on microscopic examination
Iron-deficiency anemia A problem of hemoglobin and red blood cell development caused by inadequate iron stores
Kwashiorkor Protein deprivation in person consuming adequate carbohydrates
Lacteal Lymphatic channel within each small intestinal villus critical for the absorption of fats
Lanugo A fine downy hair that covers the body in some patients with anorexia nervosa
Lipids A group of substances that are rich in energy and insoluble in water
Macronutrients Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats
Malabsorption Indicates a lack of movement of specific nutrients across the gastrointestinal mucosa
Malabsorption syndrome A condition in which several nutrients are not adequately absorbed
Malnutrition A state of inadequate or excessive exposure to nutrients
Marasmus A condition of starvation related to deprivation of all food
Microcytic Cells are small; the term microcytic is often used to describe small red blood cells in certain types of anemia
Micronutrients Vitamins and mineral
Minerals Inorganic substances critical to the regulation of hundreds of cellular processed
Nutrient A food or liquid that supplies the body with the chemical needed for metabolism
Nutrition The process of ingestion and use of nutrients for energy
Obesity A state of excessive body fat in which the body mass index is greater than 30 kg/m2
Overnutrition A state of excessive exposure to nutrients
Overweight Defined as a body mass index between 25-30 kg/m2
Passive diffusion
