Urinary Elimination
| Term | Definition |

| Anuria | absence of urine, or up to a 100ml volume in 24 hours. |
| Bedpan | seat like container for elimination. |
| Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUI) | infections acquired by those with indwelling urinary catheters especially with those that are in place for a prolonged period of time. |
| Catheter Care | hygiene measures used to keep the meatus and adjacent area of the catheter clean. |
| Catheter Irrigation | flushing the lumen of a catheter. |
| Catheterization | act of applying or inserting a hollow tube. |
| Clean Catch Specimen | voided sample of urine that is considered sterile. |
| Closed Drainage System | device used to collect urine from a catheter. |
| Commode | portable chair used for elimination. |
| Continence Training | process of restoring control of urination. |
| Continuous Irrigation | ongoing instillation of solution. |
| Crede' Maneuver | act of bending forward and applying hand pressure over the bladder to stimulate urination. |
| Cutaneous Triggering | the act of lightly massaging or tapping the skin above the pubic area to stimulate urination. |
| Dysuria | difficult or uncomfortable voiding. |
| External Catheter | device applied to the skin that collects urine. |
| Fenestrated Drape | one with an open circle at its center. |
| Frequency | need to urinate often. |
| Incontinence | inability to control either urinary or bowel elimination. |
| Nocturia | nighttime urination. |
| Oliguria | urine output of less than 400ml per 24 hours. |
| Pelvic Floor Muscle Exercises (Kegel exercises) | isometric exercises to improve the ability to retain urine within the bladder. |
| Peristomal Skin | skin around a stoma. |
| Polyuria | larger than normal urinary volume. |
| Residual Urine | urine that remains in the bladder after voiding. |
| Retention Catheter | urinary tube that is left in place for a period of time. |
| Stasis | lack of movement. |
| Straight Catheter | urine drainage tube that is inserted but not left in place. |
| 24 hour specimen | collection of all the urine produced in a full 24 hour period. |
| Urgency | strong feeling that urine must be eliminated quickly. |
| Urinal | cylindrical container for collecting urine. |
| Urinary Diversion | procedure in which one or both ureters are surgically implanted elsewhere. |
| Urinary Elimination | process of releasing excess fluid and metabolic wastes. |
| Urine | fluid in the bladder |
| Urostomy | urinary diversion that discharges urine from an opening on the abdomen. |
| Voided Specimen | freshly urinated sample of urine. |
| Voided Reflex | spontaneous relaxation of the urinary sphincter in response to physical stimulation. |
