| element | a substance that can't be broken down into simpler substances |
| compound | two or more different elements joined by a chemical bond |
| mixture | a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element (basic unit of matter) |
| proton | subatomic particle with a positive charge, located in the nucleus of an atom |
| neutron | subatomic particle with no charge (neutral), located in the nucleus of an atom |
| electron | subatomic particle with a negative charge, located outside the nucleus |
| physical property | a characteristic of a substance (color, density, state of matter) |
| chemical property | a characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to participate in chemical reactions (flammable, reactive) |
| physical change | change of matter from one form to another without a change in properties (bend, melt, crush) |
| chemical change | a substance changes into a new substance with different properties (wood burns to produce ash and gases) |
| atomic number | number of protons in one atom of an element |
| mass number | combined number of protons and neutrons in one atom of an element |
| metal | an element that is shiny and conducts heat and electricity well |
| metalloid | an element with properties of both metals and nonmetals (often used as semiconductors) |
| nonmetal | an element that conducts heat and electricity poorly |
| group | vertical column on the Periodic Table, there are 18 |
| period | horizontal row on the Periodic Table, there are 7 |
| chemical symbol | one or two letter abbreviation for the name of an element |
