Section 3: Types of Interactions Vocabulary Study Cards

TermDefinition
adaptation the process in which a living thing changes slightly over time to survive in a particular environment
carrying capacity The largest population that an environment can support at any given time
coevolution Long-term changes that take place in two species’ close interaction so that both organisms’ relationship is more beneficial
commensalism A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected
limiting factor Resources that are so scarce that it limits the size of a population
mutualism A relationship between two species in which both species benefit
parasitism A relationship between two species where the parasite benefits from the host, but the host is harmed
predator An organism that eats all or part of another organism
prey An organism that is killed and eaten by other organisms
symbiosis A close, long-term association between two or more species
