Sound Waves Vocab
6th grade science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a sound wave? | the pattern of disturbance caused by the movement of energy traveling through a medium and moves away from the source. |
| What is a longitudinal wave? | the particle movement is parallel to the direction of the wave rather than perpendicular like a transverse wave. |
| What are the 3 properties of sound? | 1. speed of sound 2.pitch and frequency 3. loudness and amplitude |
| What can affect the speed of sound? | the medium that the sound travels through can affect the speed. Sound travels fast through air, even faster through liquid, and fastest through solid. |
| Can temperature affect the speed of sound? | Yes! The higher the temperature of the medium, the faster the sound travels. |
| What does the pitch and frequency of a wave mean? | Pitch is how low or high the sound seems. The higher the frequency, the higher the pitch. This is a direct relationship. |
| What is loudness and amplitude mean when talking about sound waves? | Loudness is a measure of how well the sound can be heard. -As you hit something harder or increase sound with an amplifier you are causing the amplitude of the wave to increase. This increases the energy and makes the sound louder. |
| What is the Doppler Effect? | The change in sound due to the object or the listener moving. Ex. a siren is quieter the further it is from the listener. |
| What is a wave reflection? | the bouncing back of waves after it hits a barrier. This is called an echo. |
| What is echolocation? | Sound waves that animals release that bounce off objects. By measuring the time it takes for the wave to bounce off the object and return the animal knows where the object is. |
| What animals use echolocation to find food or objects in their path? | Bats, dolphins, birds, ect... |
| What are 2 forms of sound waves that humans can use? | Sonar and Ultrasonography (Ultrasound) |
| What is sonar used for? | Sound waves help navigators on ships find icebergs or fish. Oceanographers use sonar to map the ocean floor. |
| What is ultrasonography or ultrasound used for? | Uses sound waves to bounce off objects in a person’s body to “see” inside the body. |
