Section 2: Living Things Need Energy Section Study Questions

QuestionAnswer
Herbivores, Carnivores, and scavengers are all examples of...? consumers
Why are decomposers important in an ecosystem? they remove energy from dead organisms and break them down to be reused in nature
How do producers make their own food? They use sunlight to go through photosynthesis to create glucose (sugar) for themselves.
How much energy do primary consumers get from producers such as plants? 10%
What organism eats a primary consumer? secondary consumer
What organism eats a secondary consumer? tertiary consumer
Is a scavenger a producer, consumer, or decomposer? consumer
Two examples of decomposers include... bacteria, fungi
An herbivore is an organism that eats... only plants
An omnivore is an organism that eats... plants and animals
A carnivore is an organism that eats... animals/meat
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web? a food chain is how energy in food flows from one organism to another while a food chain is a system of of many connected food chains in an ecosystem
Which one of these terms describes what is at the top of the food chain? producer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, secondary consumer tertiary consumer
What is at the beginning of the food pyramid? producers
Who transfers more energy, an organism at the bottom of the food pyramid or at the top of the pyramid? bottom
What are the two main food webs in the world? land and aquatic
What happens to energy that is not used by an organism? It becomes stored energy
Why are simple food chains rare? organisms eat more than one type of food
Can energy move back and forth or only in a one way direction? one way direction
Where do you find the largest amount of organisms on the energy pyramid? at the bottom
Is energy increased or lost the higher up on the energy pyramid the organism goes? energy is lost
How can a single species change the flow of energy in an ecosystem? when one organism is lost or extinct, that organism is no longer a food source for another organism which changes the entire food chain dynamic in an ecosystem
Can organisms be part of more than one food chain? Yes
In what order would you put these organisms in a food chain? hawk, snake, grass, mouse grass, mouse, snake, hawk
In what order would you put these organisms in a food chain? fish, plankton, shark, dolphin plankton, fish, dolphin, shark
In what order would you put these organisms in a food chain? hyena, antelope, cougar, lion antelope, cougar, hyena, lion
