Chapter 3 Vocab

Fundamentals of Engineering Textbook Chapter 3: Engineering Design

TermDefinition
Brainstorming Involves generating ideas in order to develop solutions. This can be done by an individual, but is more commonly and more effectively done in groups.
Computer Simulation Used for testing because they take relatively little time and money to set up and run, but much can be learned.
Computer-aided design (CAD) Designers use this to create drawings in order to communicate solutions to design problems.
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Converts the CAD models into 3-D shapes.
Design Brief Guides the design process.
Engineering Design The creative application of technology to design a system, product, or process to solve a given problem or meet a given need.
Engineering Notebook Used to record all the thoughts, ideas, sketches, calculation, designs, and much more that has to do with the engineering process.
Ideation The process of generating ideas.
Mechanical Drawing Are highly accurate technical drawings meant to communicate the size and shape of objects in great detail.
Multiview Drawing It is usually necessary to include more than one view of an object to completely communicate the shape and size.
Orthographic Drawing Also known as multiview drawings are the true shape, and show what a part will look like from a given direction.
Pictorial Drawing Show a single view of an object, but show it in a way that makes it look 3-D, as your eye would see it.
Problem Statement Outlines the problem in clear terms, but it is not so specific that it limits creativity in design.
Prototype Physical models of a final product or some aspect of a product.
Rapid Prototyping Is increasingly popular because it is a fast and affordable way to move from design to prototype.
Rendering Full color drawing that shows what the object will look like in a given light.
Reverse Engineering The process of examining existing products or processes to gain information.
Sketches Usually made to record and communicate ideas so they can be refined further in the solution set up.
Specification Sheets Provide the necessary technical information to the builder or manufacturer of the product.
Three-Dimensional (3-D) Model Can be made by hand with Clay, plastic, wood or Foam or be created using CAD Software.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
