Solar System Vocab

TermDefinition
gravity A force that pulls objects together. Una fuerza que une objetos.
comet An object in the solar system made mostly of ice, which follows a long, narrow orbit around the Sun. Un objeto en el sistema solar hecho principalmente de hielo, que sigue una órbita larga y estrecha alrededor del Sol.
meteoroid Small, rocky bodies that revolve around the sun. Cuerpos pequeños y rocosos que giran alrededor del sol.
meteor A piece of rock from space that enters the Earth’s atmosphere and burns, creating a bright streak of light across the sky.
meteorite A meteoroid that has hit the ground Meteorito: Un meteoroide que ha tocado el suelo
asteroids Objects made of rock, metal, and ice that are much smaller than planets and revolve around the Sun. Objetos hechos de roca, metal y hielo que son mucho más pequeños que los planetas y giran alrededor del Sol.
asteroid belt A wide region between Mars and Jupiter where most asteroids revolve around the sun. Una amplia región entre Marte y Júpiter donde la mayoría de los asteroides giran alrededor del sol.
sun A star that is the center of a planetary system. Una estrella que es el centro de un sistema planetario.
planet An object that moves in a path around a star. Objeto que se mueve en un camino alrededor de una estrella.
terrestrial planet A planet that is small, dense and has a solid, rocky surface. Terrestrial planets are closer to the sun and closer to one another compared to gas giants. Ex: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
gas giant Very large planets that don’t have any known solid surfaces. Gas Giants are farther apart from one another and farther from the sun than terrestrial planets. Ex: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune.
dwarf planet A celestial body in direct orbit of the Sun that is massive enough for its shape to be controlled by gravitation, but which has not cleared its orbital region of other objects. Ex: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris
moon An object that orbits a planet. Un objeto que orbita un planeta.
solar system A system of planets or other bodies orbiting a star. Un sistema de planetas u otros cuerpos orbitando una estrella.
