| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Radiation | heat transferred through matter or empty space (no direct contact) by electromagnetic waves. |
| Convection | heat transferred by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas. (fluids) |
| Conduction | heat transferred when two objects touch. |
| Energy | the ability to do work |
| Kinetic energy | the energy of motion |
| Thermal energy | the total kinetic energy due to the motion of the atoms in a substance |
| Temperature | the measure of how hot or cold something is |
| Electrical energy | When an electrical source is connected in a complete circuit to an electrical device |
| Mechanical energy | When objects push or pull each other |
| Heat | the transfer of thermal energy between objects that are different temperatures |
| Thermal equilibrium | the point at which two objects that are touching reach the same temperature. |
| Convection currents | The upward movement of warm air and downward movement of cool air |
| Electromagnetic waves | can transmit energy through matter or empty space. |
| Potential energy | the energy that is stored in an object due to its position relative to some zero position. |
| Sun | most important source of energy for life on Earth |
