General Plant Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Stems Plant organs that hold leaves, flowers, and fruit on the plant.
Xylem tissues Carry water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem tissues Carry sugar away from the leaves to the other parts of the plants.
Roots Store food, anchor the plant in the soil, and absorb minerals and water from the soil.
Flower Organs made of tissues of similar cells, responsible for some plants' reproduction.
Stamen The male part of the plant.
Pistil The female part of the plant. It is shaped like a bottle.
Pollen A grainy, often yellow powder that is on top of the stamen.
Pollination Moving pollen from the stamen to the pistil .
Leaves Make food for the plant.
Photosynthesis. The process by which certain cells within green leaves of plants change water, carbon dioxide, and light energy into sugar and oxygen.
Respiration The process by which plant cells use stored food for energy.
Chlorophyll A green substance within chloroplasts that absorbs light energy.
Chloroplasts A green colored structure, found only in plant cells, that is essential to a plant's food production
