Study Questions

QuestionAnswer
Into what class are the birds placed? The mammals? Birds are placed into the class Aves. Mammals are classified into the class Mammilia.
List seven features of birds. Of those seven, what are the four that found only in birds? All birds: are endothermic; have feathers, wings, and a break; lay eggs, have air sacs and a lightweight skeleton. The four unique features are feathers, beaks, air sacs, and light-weight skeletons.
How to air sacs work such that they help a bird to breathe during inhalation and exhalation? When a bird breathes in (inhales) fresh air fills the lungs and the air sacs. Gas exchange then occurs in the lungs. When the bird exhales, the old air exits the lungs and the air that was in the air sacs enters the lungs. Gas exchange can then occur agai
If you are looking at bird footprints near a lake and saw a pair of them were webbed, what could you conclude about the birds ability to swim? Why? Webbed feet indicate the bird is a good swimmer (ie. is an aquatic bird). The webbing of the feet allows the bird to propel itself very powerfully and efficiently with each kick of the foot.
If you were at the same lake and saw a set of prints that showed the bird had powerful claws, would you make the connection that that bird was a good swimmer? Why or why not? Powerful claws are called talons. Birds that have talons are not good swimmers because there is no webbing. Birds that have talons are hunters and are called birds of prey.
What is a keel? A keel is a thick breastbone that is specialized for the attachment of the thick flying muscles.
True or False? Birds have a two-loop circulatory system. True.
What are the groups of mammals? There are three groups of mammals; the monotremes, the marsupials, and the placental mammals.
What group of mammals lays eggs? Monotremes are the egg-laying mammals.
What are nine characteristics of mammals? Mammals: have mammary glands, hair, specialized teeth, and a single lower jaw bone: are endothermic; store excess energy as fat; have large brains, a diaphragm, and the highest degree of parental care of all animal species.
Of those nine, which is the defining feature? The defining features of mammals is the presence of mammary glands.
What is a mandible? What is special about the mammal mandible? The mandible is the lower jaw bone. Mammalian mandibles are special because they are formed from only one bone.
True or False? Only placental mammals form a placenta. False. Both placental mammals and marsupials form a placenta. However, the marsupial placenta does not last very long because the young are born at such an immature stage. The placenta of placental mammals lasts much longer, until the baby is fully develo
What is the umbilical cord? The umbilical cord is the connection between the developing mammal baby and the placenta.
What mammal order has teeth that are specialized for gnawing, so much so that their teeth grow throughout their lifetime? Rodentia.
What is commonly the main diet of members of Insectivora? Insects.
Members of Edentata do not have teeth, but they usually have a special structure that helps them obtain their food. What is it? A long, sticky tongue.
What is unique about the members of Chiroptera? The members of Chiroptera are called bats. They are the only mammals that are able to fly.
True or False? Bats are the only mammals that use echolocation. False. Bats and Cetaceans are able to use echolocation.
If you were looking at a mammal that had four toes on its hooves and chewed its cud, what order would it be classifies into? This is an even-toed ungulate, classified into Artiodactyla.
True or False? Elephant tusks are long teeth. True.
What does a carnivore mainly eat? An herbivore? An omnivore? Carnivores eat mainly meat. Herbivores eat plants and omnivores eat meat and plants.
True or False? Cetaceans and Sirens both breathe through blowholes. False. Cetaceans breathe through blowholes but sirens breathe through noses.
What are two features that Primates have, regarding their hands, not found on other species. Primates are the only species to have five fingers per hand/foot covered with a nail.
True or False? Apes have tails. False. No apes have tails.
List at least two ways to tell a monkey from an ape. Monkeys usually have tails, apes never do. Ape arms can be lifted all the way over the head for swinging, monkey arms cannot. Ape arms are usually as long/longer than their legs, arms are not. Apes are usually “larger” and monkeys are usually “smaller.”
