| blubber | The thick fat layer that insulates in whales and other mammal species that live in the cold waters of oceans. |
| cerebellum | The part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. |
| cloaca | An opening from which a bird releases wastes. |
| diaphragm | A thin muscle found between the chest cavity and the abdominal cavity that is the "breathing muscle" in mammals. |
| down | Feathers made to keep the bird warm. |
| excrete | To release wastes. |
| exhalation | Breathing out. |
| feather | The defining feature of birds. |
| flight feathers, or contour feathers | Feathers that are specially designed for flight. |

| mammary glands | The defining characteristic of mammals, found only on the female to produce milk to feed the young after they are born. |
| mandible | The single lower jaw bone of all mammals. |
| marsupials (order Marsupialia) | Mammals that give live birth to their offspring at an immature age, and the offspring complete their development in a pouch. |
| monotremes (order Monotremata) | Mammal species which lay eggs. |
| ornithologists | Scientists who study birds. |
| ornithology | The study of birds. |
| parental care | The act of parents caring for and protecting their young. |
| perching birds | Birds that have specially-shaped feet, so they can sit on tree limbs for long periods. |
| placenta | A temporary organ that forms between the mother and developing baby, which provides nutrition and gas exchange to the developing baby from the mother's blood stream. |
| placental mammals (order Placentalia) | Mammals that give live birth to full-term offspring. |
| Primates | Order of Mammalia that includes monkeys and apes. Humans are also classified as primates. |
| umbilical cord | The structure that takes oxygen and nutrition to the baby from the placenta, waste from the baby to the placenta. |
| water birds | Birds that spend a lot of time in and near water. |
