Plate Tectonics

Chapter 3 Plate tectonics

QuestionAnswer
Explain continental drift Continental drift is the idea that the continents slowly moved over Earth's surface
What is Pangea? Pangea is a single landmass (super continent) that once existed 300 million years ago
What was Wegener's Hypothesis about the continents? Wegener's hypothesis was that all the continents were once joined to ether in a single landmass and have since drifted apart.
List evidence that Pangea once existed Fossils found on numerous continents, mountain ranges lined up, climate change
What are mid-ocean ridges? Mid-ocean ridges form long chains of mountains that rise from the sea floor
Explain sea-floor spreading. mid-ocean ridges continually add new material to the ocean floor. More crust is added to the ocean floor while older strips of rock move outward from either side of the ridges
List the evidence for sea floor spreading Evidence from ocean material, magnetic strips, and drilling samples.
What is a deep ocean trench It is a huge underwater canyon.
Explain subduction. when the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle again
What is the theory of plate tectonics? The theory of plate tectonics states that Earth's plates are in slow, constant motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle.
What is a divergent boundary? when two plates move apart
What is a convergent boundary? when two plates come together
What is a transform boundary? when plates slide past each other
Scientists think the continents once formed a large single landmass that broke part and the continents slowly drifted to their present locations. What is the name given to this hypothesis? continental drift
Which theory explains why the island of Cuba moves a few centimeters each year? plate tectonics
Fossils of the same reptile are found in South America and Africa. These fossils indicate that the same reptile lived on both continents at the same time. How does the theory of plate tectonics explain this observation? The theory states that both continents were once part of a single larger continent.
Earthquakes that occur on land are caused by which of the following? Earth’s plates shifting and colliding against each other
Earthquakes typically occur _____. along plate boundaries
The movement of the tectonic plates is due to _____. convection currents
Where do convection currents happen inside Earth? In the mantle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
