Matter and Energy
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Conductivity | whether or not a material can conduct heat and electricity |
| Conductor | a material that will allow heat and electricity to pass through it |
| Relative Density | whether a substance will sink or float in another substance |
| Dissolve | to mix completely with another substance to form a solution |
| Evaporation | a process that changes liquid to gas |
| Ingredient | the component (part) of a mixture |
| Insulator | a material that stops or slows the flow of heat, electricity, or sound |
| Magnetism | a pulling force from a magnet |
| Mass | the amount of matter in an object or substance |
| Matter | what everything in the universe is made of; has mass and takes up space |
| Mixture | the combination of two or more parts but keep their original properties |
| Physical Change | changes to matter without forming a new substance |
| Physical Property | factors of matter that can be measured, observed, or changed without changing the substance |
| Solubility | whether or not a substance will dissolve in another substance |
| Soluble | a property that allows a substance to dissolve in another |
| Solution | the evenly distributed mixture of two or more parts |
| States of Matter | any form that matter can take = solid, liquid, gas |
| Substance | the material that something is made of |
| Temperature | the measure of the average kinetic energy of motion of the particles of matter |
| Volume | the amount of space matter takes up |
| Water Vapor | the gaseous form of water; water changed from liquid to gas |
| Balance | a tool that measures the mass of an object |
| Graduated Cylinder | a tool that more accurately measures the volume of a liquid, or irregular solids |
| Beaker | a tool that measures the volume of liquids |
| Thermometer | a tool that measures the energy of particles (temperature) |
