The Earth in Space

QuestionAnswer
What does mass have to do with how things revolve around each other in the solar system? Things with less mass revolve around things with more mass (like the planets that revolve around the sun).
Understand the order of the size of the following things in space: galaxy, moon, solar system and planet-know these things smallest to largest)
What are light years used to measure? Large distances between things like stars and galaxies.
Earth is near the edge of what galaxy? The Milky Way Galaxy, which is a spiral galaxy. Earth is in the spiral arm
Saturn is not the only planet with rings, which of the other planets have rings? All of the gas planets have rings: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune (Saturn's rings are the largest).
Why do certain planets have equal seasons? The tilt on their axis causes seasons. Less of a tilt will cause some planets to have little or no seasons.
Why did people thousands of years ago think Earth stood still? They were only able to observe what looked like the movement of the sun and were able to see the moon and other planets visible to them at that time.
Define geocentric and heliocentric models: Heliocentric-a sun-centered model where planets orbit the sun. Geocentric-an Earth-centered model showing the sun, moon and planets circling it
What is the difference between rotation and revolution in space? Rotation determines the length of a day (when an object rotates on its axis) Revolution determines the length of a year Ex-Earth/s rotation is one day every 24hrs and one year every 365.25 days
How is Earth tilted when it is winter int eh Northern Hemisphere? Earth is tilted with the Northern Hemisphere pointed away from the sun in winter.
During what moon phases do we have the largest gravitational pull on Earth and therefore the highest tides? When the moon is in the full moon and new moon phases.
What happens during a full moon and a new moon? Think of the alignment of the objects: Full moon-The near side of the moon is brightly lit New Moon- The near side of the moon is dark
Why does Venus have such high temperatures? Venus has a very thick atmosphere.
What is the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse? Solar-the moon moves in a nearly straight line between the Earth and sun. Lunar-The moon moves through Earth's shadow.
