Describe the meaning of a compound? A substance made of two or more kinds of atoms that are chemically combined.

What is a change of state? A physical change that occurs when matter changes from one state to another.
Describe a chemical change. A change that results in the formation of new substance.
What is a physical property? A trait of a substance by itself.
Describe a physical change. A change that does not result in a new substance.
Which property involves how a substance interacts with other substances? chemical property
Name a common physical property of nonmetal. brittle
Name a chemical property of a substance. reacts with oxygen
Examples of elements. iron, gold, silver
Example of chemical reaction Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water.
What happens when something is boiling? water changes to gas when heated
An example of matter. paper
examples of compounds. salt, sulfur dioxide, water
You heat a solid and at 52 degrees C it melts and turns to liquid. Predict: What will happen when the liquid cools below 52 degree C? The liquid will change back into a solid as it reaches freezing point.
You mix metal shavings that are magnetic with powder Then separate the metal shavings from powder with a magnet. Explain if a chemical reaction did or did not take place? The properties of the metal stayed the same and the two substances did not react to form a new substance.
Is a spoonful of salt is dissolved in a glass of water a physical or chemical change? Explain When the water evaporates just salt remains in the same state as before being mixed with water. A chemical change would make a new substance.
What do you predict would happen if you put an iron nail in a bottle with water for a few days? Oxygen and water would cause the nail to rust
What do you predict will occur if you place an iron nail in a container with just air? Oxygen alone does not cause a nail to rust.
