| bacteria (singular, bacterium) | the most common form of one-celled organisms |
| eukaryote | an organism whose cells have nuclei |
| prokaryote | a single-celled organism that does not have a nucleus |
| microbe (or microorganism) | an organism that can be seen only through a microscope |
| fungi (singular, fungus) | eukaryotes that have cell walls, reproduce by spores, and get food by absorbing it from their surroundings |
| enzyme | a substance that causes a chemical change in another substance |
| metabolism | the combination of chemical reactions that takes place in an organism; food is converted into energy that the organism uses to carry out its life processes |
| colony | a group of only one kind of bacteria that grows from a single, original bacterium |
| homeostasis | the process by which an organism keeps its internal environment in a constant condition despite changes in its external environment |
| spore | in bacteria, a dormant structure that allows the bacterial cell to survive unfavorable conditions. In fungi, a cell that develops into a new organism |
