U 3 Earth's Surface
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| weathering | The breaking down of rocks on Earth's surface into smaller pieces. |
| erosion | The process of moving weathered rock and sediment from one place to another. |
| deposition | The dropping or settling of eroded materials. |
| sediment | Sand, bits of rock, fossils, and other matter carried and deposited by water, wind, or ice. |
| landform | Any recognizable feature on Earth\ns surface shaped by natural causes. |
| flood plain | The wide, flat area alongside a river. |
| volcano | A place where hot gases, ash, and melted rock come out of the ground onto Earth's surface. |
| Delta | a delta forms at the mouth of a river, where sediment weathered and eroded by the river is deposited. |
| Arch | An arch is formed by wind and water erosion of rocks |
| Moraine | As a glacier begins to melt, the rocks and sediment it carried downhill drops out. |
| Fault | Faults are fractures or breaks in the Earth's crust. |
| Dunes | A dune is formed by erosion and deposition when the wind shapes sand. |
| Ox- bow lakes | during floods, water can erode the narrow strip of land between closely spaced loops in the river, this results in an ox-bow lake. |
| Rift Valley | In places where plates are pulling apart a rift valley may form. A rift valley is a tear in the crust. |
| Plates | The earth is made of broken pieces of crust called plates. As the plates move, they may collide, pull apart or slide past each other. |
| Plateau | A plateau is a large, flat block of land that is higher than its surroundings. Mountains and plateaus form where plates collide. |
| Earthquake | Earthquakes occur when forces within the Earth release energy. |
| Valley | A valley is a depression between mountains |
| Canyon | A canyon is a narrow valley with high walls |
| Basins | A basin is a large, bowl-shaped dip in the land. They are the lowest point in a rift valley |
