U 3 Earth's Surface

QuestionAnswer
weathering The breaking down of rocks on Earth's surface into smaller pieces.
erosion The process of moving weathered rock and sediment from one place to another.
deposition The dropping or settling of eroded materials.
sediment Sand, bits of rock, fossils, and other matter carried and deposited by water, wind, or ice.
landform Any recognizable feature on Earth\ns surface shaped by natural causes.
flood plain The wide, flat area alongside a river.
volcano A place where hot gases, ash, and melted rock come out of the ground onto Earth's surface.
Delta a delta forms at the mouth of a river, where sediment weathered and eroded by the river is deposited.
Arch An arch is formed by wind and water erosion of rocks
Moraine As a glacier begins to melt, the rocks and sediment it carried downhill drops out.
Fault Faults are fractures or breaks in the Earth's crust.
Dunes A dune is formed by erosion and deposition when the wind shapes sand.
Ox- bow lakes during floods, water can erode the narrow strip of land between closely spaced loops in the river, this results in an ox-bow lake.
Rift Valley In places where plates are pulling apart a rift valley may form. A rift valley is a tear in the crust.
Plates The earth is made of broken pieces of crust called plates. As the plates move, they may collide, pull apart or slide past each other.
Plateau A plateau is a large, flat block of land that is higher than its surroundings. Mountains and plateaus form where plates collide.
Earthquake Earthquakes occur when forces within the Earth release energy.
Valley A valley is a depression between mountains
Canyon A canyon is a narrow valley with high walls
Basins A basin is a large, bowl-shaped dip in the land. They are the lowest point in a rift valley
