Terms and definitions of 1st yr drugs

TermDefinition
Drug Mosby Mosby’s: Drug defined as “any substance taken by mouth, injected into muscle, blood vessel, body cavity, applied topically, to treat or prevent disease or condition”
Drug Definition Oxford dictionary: A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced to the body
Antagonism An interaction between 2 drugs that have opposing effects on the body. Drug antagonism can block or reduce the effectiveness of one or more drugs
Contraindications Medical or physiological factors that make it harmful to administer medication that would otherwise have therapeutic value. It is therefore not indicated for the patient.
Depressant Substance that decreases body function or activity Systemic reaction to drug resulting from previous sensitising exposure and development of immunological mechanism
Drug dependence State in which withdrawal of drug produces intense physical or emotional disturbance
Drug interaction Beneficial or detrimental modification of effects of one drug by prior or concurrent administration of another drug that increases or decreases the pharmacological or physiological action of one or both drugs
Idiosyncrasy Abnormal or peculiar responses to drug 1 leading to abnormal mechanisms of drug metabolism or altered physiological effects of drug
Enteral route Enteral is any route of drug administration that involves absorption of the drug through the gastrointestinal tract.
Parenteral route Parenteral route refers to the injectable route of drug administration
Pharmacokinetics How body handles drug over time
Drug forms Many drugs have advantages and disadvantages.
FIO2 The fraction of oxygen inspired by the patient
