Key Area 2.4

Revision for Key area 2.4 Variation and Inheritance

QuestionAnswer
What is discrete variation? Discrete variation is where a characteristic fall into distinct groups
Give 2 examples of discrete variation Hair colour, Eye colour, tongue rolling etc
What is continuous variation? Is where a characteristic can have any value in a range
Give 2 examples of continuous variation Height, weight, foot length, shell length etc
Which type of variation is polygenic? Continuous variation
Define polygenic Characteristic is controlled by many genes
Define Phenotype The physical characteristics that an organism possesses
Define genotype The genes that an organism possesses
What are different forms of a gene called Alleles
Define the term 'true breeding' Organism that can only pass on one type of allele to offspring (homozygous) so if crossed with an organism who has the same genotype as them, all offspring have same phenotype as the parents
Define homozygous The two alleles of the gene are the same (e.g. DD or dd)
Define heterozygous The two alleles of the gene are different (e.g. Dd)
Dominant genes are presented a which type of letter : lowercase or capital Capital letter
Why is the expected ratio for offspring often different from the observed ratio? Fertilisation is a random process
To predict the genotype of offspring, what diagram shpuld you use? Punnett square
