Phase Change Vocab

TermDefinition
freezing point The temperature at which a substance freezes.
atom the smallest unit of an element that has the properties of that element.
boil the change of a liquid to a vapor. This happens when the vapor pressure equals the atmospheric pressure.
Boiling point the temperature at which a material changes from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation the change of state from a gas to a liquid
energy movement of atoms, molecules, compounds, or matter. Energy comes in many forms including heat, kinetic, potential, mechanical or electrical.
evaporation the change of state from a liquid to a gas only at the surface.
freedom of movement the way molecules in a substance move around each other, or away from each other
freeze the change of state in which a liquid becomes a solid by taking away heat.
gas a form of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape
kinetic energy the energy that an object has because it is moving
liquid the state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
Melt the change of state in which a solid becomes a liquid by adding heat
Melting point The temperature at which a substance melts.
molecular attraction a pull between two molecules
molecule the smallest particle of a substance that still has the properties of that substance
particle a very small piece or amount of matter.
phase a noticeably different form or state of the same substance
plasma a state of matter that starts as a gas and then becomes ionized, meaning that it has free-moving ions and electrons and takes on an electric charge.
Solid the state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed.
States of matter The physical forms of matter, which include solid, liquid, and gas.
temperature a measure of how hot or cold something is. The higher the temperature is, the more energy it has.
Sublimation A change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
