Unit 3

Plate Tectonics

TermDefinition
asthenosphere the mantle directly under the lithosphere
Subduction when one tectonic plate goes under another one
Seafloor spreading when the ridges open up and push the other ridges away from the middle
Mantle convection when the hot less dense part of the mantle rises, and cools on the way up, and when it cools it begins to sink back down in an infinite cycle which is one of the most powerful forces moving the lithosphere
Ridge push when magma pushes up and forces the plate tectonics away from each other in opposite directions
Slab pull pulling a tectonic plate into the mantle at a subduction zone
Lava molten rock thats gone above the earth and onto the surface
Magma molten rock under the ground and has not reached the surface
Tectonic Plates earths crust broken up in uneven chunks around the globe
Theory of continental drift The theory that the continents used to all be one super continent, until they were forced apart and drifted around the world to where they are now, and are still in motion. The Theory was by Wegner
Convergent boundary when two tectonic plates collide into each other
Divergent boundary when two plate move away from each other
Transform boundary when two tectonic plates go past each other and slide against each other
Hot spot an unusually hot area that will allow volcanoes to form in the middle of the tectonic plates
Epicenter directly above the earthquakes focus point
Focus the spot where the earth breaks from stress
Pangaea A supercontinent made up of all the continents, that broke apart to make our earth now
Geohazard A natural disaster in the lithosphere that can cause mass damage
Reverse fault A convergent, compression that will cause an earthquake
Strike-slip fault Shearing, transform boundary that causes an earthquake
Normal fault A tension, divergent boundary that causes an earthquake
Compression force that pushes rocks together
Tension force that stretches rock in the middle
Shearing when rocks are pushed are away from each other
Felsic light coloured igneous rocks
Mafic Igneous rocks with a lot of iron (dark coloured)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
