Space & Lunar Phases
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Revolution | One orbit of an object in space around another object in space. Such as the moon around the earth |
| Rotation | Spinning of a planet, moon, sun, or other object around its axis |
| Axis | Imaginary line passing through the center of a planet, that the planet spins around |
| Equator | Imaginary line around the middle of the earth, halfway between the two poles |
| Comets | Solar system object made of mostly ice, which follows a long narrow orbit around the sun. Occasionally comes near the sun |
| Waxing Phase | Moon phase from new moon to full moon as the lit surface of the moon seems to grown larger |
| Waning Phase | Moon phase from full moon to to new moon as the lit surface of the moon seems to grown smaller |
| Sun | The star around which the earth orbits. |
| Hemisphere | One half of a sphere. The earth divided at the equator or at the prime meridian and international date line. |
| Earth | the planet on which we live; the world. |
| Orbit | Path an object in space follows as it revolves around another object. |
| First Quarter Moon | The First Quarter Moon is a primary Moon phase when we can see exactly half of the Moon's surface illuminated |
| Moon | A natural object that revolves around a planet |
| Equinox | One of two days in the year when the hours of daylight equal the hours of darkness over earth as a whole |
| Solstice | One of two days in the year when hours of daylight and hours of darkness are at their greatest and least. |
| Third Quarter Moon | The phase of the moon at which the moon, as viewed from Earth, appears to be half illuminated by the sun, on its easternmost side |
| Planets | a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. |
| Full Moon | The phase of the moon in which its whole disk is illuminated. |
| New Moon | the phase of the moon when it is in conjunction with the sun and invisible from earth |
| Meteors | A piece of rock from space that enters the earths atmosphere and burns creating a bright light across the sky |
| Asteroids | An object of small rock, metal, and ice that are smaller than planets and revolve around the sun |
| Neap Tide | Tides that are least extreme. Happen twice a month, at first and last quarter moon phases |
| Spring Tide | Tides that are the most extreme. Happen twice a month at full moon and new moon phases |
