Chapter 13 Questions

QuestionAnswer
What is stem cutting a grafting a form of? Stem cutting a grafting are forms of asexual reproduction, or of vegetative reproduction.
What reproductive structure does a sporophyte produce? Sporophytes produce the reproductive structures called spores.
What reproductive structure does a gametophyte produce. Gametophytes produce male and female gametes, or sperm and eggs.
True or False? Most plants live either as a sporophyte or gametophyte. False. ALL plants live either as a sporophyte or gametophyte.
True or False? Fern gametophytes are quite large and are the plant structures we see when we look at a fern. False. Fern gametophytes are very small, often no larger than a dime. It is the sporophyte phase we are looking at when we see a "fern."
What phase does a spore grow into? A spore is produced by a sporophyte; therefore, a spore grows into a gametophyte.
What phase does a fertilized female gamete (zygote) grow into? Gametes are produced by gametophytes. The female gamete is the egg and the male gamete is the sperm. When a sperm fertilizes the egg, the zygote grows into a sporophyte.
In a flower, the ___________________ contains the male reproductive structures, and the ____________________ contains the female. In a flower, the stamen contains the male reproductive structures, and the pistil contains the female.
Describe the process of angiosperm fertilization, beginning with pollination. Pollination, fertilization, zygote in seed, zygote grows into sporophyte plant, male and female spores are produced, male and female spores grow into male and female gametophyte plants, male and female gametophytes produce pollen, pollination.
What is turgor pressure, and why is it important for plants? Turgor pressure is pressure that develops as the result of water pressure. As water accumulates inside of plant cells, it exerts pressure, called turgor pressure.
What is turgor pressure, and why is it important for plants? Part 2 It is important that a plant maintain the proper turgor pressure so it stays healthy and doesn't wilt.
Describe the process of materials moving through xylem. Material moves through xylem as a result of transpiration.
True or False? Auxin is the hormone responsible for gravitropism and phototropism. True.
How are tropisms and nastic movements different? Tropisms and nastic movements are different because they are caused by different processes in the plant. Tropisms are caused by auxin and nastic movements are caused by changes in turgor pressure.
What is photoperiodism? Photoperiodism is the property of certain plant processes responding to the amount of light they receive.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
