Rocks

rock mixture of minerals, rocks fragments, volcanic glass, organic matter, and other natural materials
rock cycle a model that shows how rocks slowly change through time
igneous rocks forms when hot magma cools
lava magma that reaches Earth's surface and flows form volcanoes
intrusive igneous rocks rocks that form from magma below the surface
extrusive igneous rocks rocks that are formed as lava cools on the surface of Earth
basaltic magma dense and dark-colored
granitic magma lower density, light-colored
metamorphic rock rock that has changed because of changes in temperature and pressure or the presence of hot, watery fluids
foliated texture of metamorphic rock when mineral grains line up in parallel layers
nonfoliated texture of metamorphic rock when mineral grains grow and rearrange, but they do not form layers
sediment loose materials such as rock fragments and mineral grains
sedimentary rock forms when sediments are pressed and cemented together, or when mineral grains form from solutions
compaction process that forms sedimentary rocks when layers of sediments are compressed by the layers above them
cementation occurs when minerals are depositied between teh pieces of sediment
