QuestionAnswer
What is weather? Short-term variations in atmospheric phenomena.
What is climate? Long-term variations in weather for a particular area.
After how many years do scientists classify an area's weather as its climate? 30 years
What is an air mass? A large volume of air that has the same characteristics, such as humidity & temp. as the source region.
What is a source region? An area over which an air mass forms.
Where do maritime air masses form? Over the ocean.
Where are trade winds? Between 30 degrees and the equator in both hemispheres.
Where are the prevailing westerlies? Between 30 degrees and 60 degrees north and south of the equator.
What is a front? A narrow region separating two air masses of different densities.
What is the difference between a thermometer and a barometer? A thermometer measures temperature; a barometer measures air pressure.
Compare digital and analog forecasts. Digital forecasts rely on numerical data. Analog forecasting relies on comparing past and current weather patterns.
What is a station model? A record of weather data for a particular site at a particular time.
