Terms and Standards

TermDefinition
ASME standrard is most common in the USA.
JIS text placement setting in the Text tab of the New Dimension Style dialog box to align text according to the Japanese standard
The American Institute of Architects Y14.5-2009 dimensioning standard used in architectural drafting
Unidirectional Dimensioning dimensional values are displayed horizontally and read from the bottom of the sheet
prefix symbol placed in front of a dimension value
overall dimension provide this and you can omit one of the smaller dimensions
Precision setting depends on the accuracy required to manufacture specific features.
aligned dimension Dimensions in which the text is placed at the same angle as the dimension line
location dimension A dimension used to show the position of a feature on an object.
feature A surface, hole, window, or other part of an object
associative dimension A dimension that updates when the dimensioned object is changed.
dimension A description of the size, shape, or location of features on an object.
general notes Drawing notes that are placed in a corner of the drawing or next to the title block
dimension style A saved configuration of dimension settings
alternate units Another term for dual dimensioning units

25.4 millimeters how many millimeters in 1 inch
DIMLINEAR Horizontal and vertical dimensions are placed
Baseline Dimension dimensioning to a common surface, centerline, or center plane, each dimension is independent of the others
Continue Dimension placing a line of dimensions from one feature to the next, also known as chain dimensioning
Angular Dimension one dimension and the value of the angle in degrees.
Direct Dimension applied to control the specific size or location of a feature.
DIMJOGLINE To create a break in a dimension for a long object that has a constant shape
vertex The point at which the two sides of an angle meet
datum A theoretically perfect surface, plane, point, or axis
DIMDIAMETER command to dimension a circle
Ordinate Dimension measure the horizontal or vertical distance from an origin point called the datum to a feature, such as a hole in a part.
Circles Holes are dimensioned in the view in which they appear as
DIMARC used to dimension the length of an arc.
Fillets Dimensioned in a general drawing note
WIPEOUT Creates a polygonal area that masks underlying objects with the current background color
DIMCENTER allows you to add center marks or centerlines to circular objects without adding a diameter or radius dimension.
MLEADER used to dimension chamfers
Radius arcs should be dimensioned by this according to the ASME standard
countersink A cone-shaped recess at one end of a hole that provides a mating surface for a screw head
spotface A recessed surface for a washer machined into a smaller hole
counterbore A larger-diameter hole at one end of a smaller hole that provides a place for a bolt head

REVCLOUD creates revision clouds
annotation The general term for text, notes, and symbols on a drawing
