| Mantle convection | very slow motion of Earth's mantle |
| Ridge push | gravity causing a plate to slide away from a high ridge |
| Slab pull | motion of a tectonic plate caused by subduction |
| Lava | molten rock |
| Magma | molten natural material |
| Tectonic plate | A massive slab of rock |
| Theory of continental drift | Earth's continents have moved over time |
| Convergent boundary | When tectonic plates collide with each other |
| Divergent boundary | When two tectonic plates split from each other |
| Transform boundary | When tectonic plates slide past but against each other |
| Hot spot | Volcanic regions |
| Epicenter | point in the crust wher a seismic rupture begins |

| Strike-slip fault | fractures where the blocks have mostly moved horizontally |
| Fault | Fracture |
| Compression | stress directed toward the center of a rock |
