Term | Definition |
---|---|
Asthenosphere | weak and ductile region of the upper mantle |
Subduction | where one plate moves under another and is forced to sink |
Seafloor spreading | oceanic crust is formed from volcanic activity |
Mantle convection | very slow motion of Earth's mantle |
Ridge push | gravity causing a plate to slide away from a high ridge |
Slab pull | motion of a tectonic plate caused by subduction |
Lava | molten rock |
Magma | molten natural material |
Tectonic plate | A massive slab of rock |
Theory of continental drift | Earth's continents have moved over time |
Convergent boundary | When tectonic plates collide with each other |
Divergent boundary | When two tectonic plates split from each other |
Transform boundary | When tectonic plates slide past but against each other |
Hot spot | Volcanic regions |
Epicenter | point in the crust wher a seismic rupture begins |
Focus | where an earthquake begins |
Pangaea | a super continent |
Geo hazard | geological state that may lead to damage or risk. |
Reverse fault | break in the Earth's crust, where older rocks are pushed above younger rocks |
Strike-slip fault | fractures where the blocks have mostly moved horizontally |
Fault | Fracture |
Compression | stress directed toward the center of a rock |
Tension | stress which stretches rocks in two opposite directions |
Shearing | study of structural geology |
