Fitness and Therapeutic Exercise

| Active exercise | therapeutic activity performed independently |
| Aerobic exercise | rhythmically moving all parts of the body at a moderate to slow speed without hindering the ability to breathe |
| Ambulatory electrocardiogram | continuous recording of heart rate and rhythm during normal activity |
| Ankylosis | permanent loss of joint movement |
| Artifacts | distortion on images that interfere with an accurate interpretation of the test results |
| Body composition | amount of body tissue that is lean versus fat |
| Cardiac ischemia | impaired blood flow to the heart |
| Continuous passive motion machine | electrical device that exercises joints |
| Exercise | purposeful physical activity |
| Fitness | capacity to exercise |
| Fitness exercise | physical activity performed by healthy adults |
| Isometric exercise | consists of stationary exercises during which there is no change in the length of the contracting muscle |
| Isotonic exercise | activity that involves movement and work. |
| Isokinetic exercise | activity that combines movement at a constant speed with a form of resistance |
| Maximum heart rate | the highest limit for heart rate during exercise |
| Metabolic energy equivalent (MET) | the measure of energy and oxygen consumption during exercise |
| Passive exercise | therapeutic activity that the client performs independently after proper instruction |
| Pedometer | a self monitoring motion sensing device that tracks total steps and distance walked |
| Range of motion exercises | therapeutic activities that move the joints |
| Recovery index | a guide for determining a person's fitness level |
| Step test | a submaximal fitness test involving a timed stepping activity |
| Stress electrocardiogram | tests electrical conduction through the heart during maximal activity and is performed in an acute care facility or an outpatient clinic |
| Submaximal fitness test | an exercise test that does not stress a person to exhaustion |
| Target heart rate | the goal for heart rate during exercise |
| Therapeutic exercise | activity performed by people with health risks or those being treated for an existing health problem such as following cardiac surgery |
| Walk-a-mile test | test that measures the time it takes a person to walk 1 mile |
