Plate Tectonics
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Asthenosphere | The layer of liquid rock between the lithosphere and mantle that causes the tectonic plates to move. |
Subduction | The forcing of one plate underneath another. |
Seafloor Spreading | The creation of new seafloor via the use of convection currents from the mantle. |
Mantle Convection | Convection currents that spring up from the mantle that are the cause of mid-ocean ridges. |
Ridge Push | The pushing of two ridges together that often create new sea-floor. |
Slab Pull | The pulling of tectonic plates via the force of gravity. |
Lava | Hot liquid rock and metal that's above the Earth's crust. |
Magma | Hot liquid rock and metal that's below the Earths's crust. |
Tectonic Plate | Large portions of our Earth's crust that have a tendency to move. |
Theory of Continental Drift | The theory that at one point all the continents were part of the super-continent called Pangaea but split apart due to the movement of tectonic plates. |
Convergent Boundary | The pushing of two tectonic plates against each other. |
Divergent Boundary | The pulling of two tectonic plates away from each other. |
Transform Boundary | The sliding of two tectonic plates past each other. |
Hot Spot | Areas were the heat from the mantle is exposed through the crust to the surface of the Earth. |
Epicenter | The center of a given thing, most often used to describe the center of earthquakes. |
Focus | The given origin of an earthquake. |
Pangaea | The name of the super-continent thought of in the theory of continental drift. |
Geo-hazard | A hazard/natural disaster that's caused from Earth's geological features. |
Reverse Fault | Similar to that of a convergent boundary, it's a fault that kind of converges together. |
Strike-slip Fault | Similar to that of a transform boundary, it's a fault that kind of slips past each other. |
Normal Fault | Similar to that of a divergent boundary, it's a fault that kind of divides away from eachother. |
Compression | An intense amount of mass getting sucked into one given singularity that often reduces its given size. |
Tension | The amount of given pressure between two appointed things. |
Shearing | The force used in the direction of a given mass that keeps that given object or thing moving. |
Felsic | Used to describe rocks that are rich in a mineral prime for creating other rocks such as quartz. |
Mafic | Used to describe rocks that are rich in prime minerals such as iron. |
