Fundamentals of Engineering Textbook Chapter 5: Researching Designs

TermDefinition
Cost feasibility An evaluation of the effectiveness of the potential solution from a financial perspective.
Discussion forum An area on the internet where a person can enter a question or comment and other people can respond to the question or comment on the original message.
Experimental research A type of research that uses tests to discover information about a potential solution.
Library research A type of research that uses different forms of printed and digital materials as a source of information.
Refined sketch Combine all the components of the final design, which may be a combination of different ideas.
Research A scientific way to discover facts about a certain topic or situation.
Rough sketch The first drawing completed by engineers.
Thumbnail sketch Another term used for rough sketches because of their small size.
Trade-off The consideration that gaining one positive quality in a design means you lose one other quality.
