QuestionAnswer
What are plate tectonics? Plate tectonics is a theory that explains the structure of the earths crust.
Alfred Wegener. A German Geophysicist and meteorologist who came up with the first continental drift statement.
Pangaea Pangaea was a super-continent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras.
Crust The outermost layer of the Earth.
Lithosphere The rigid outer part of the earth, consisting of the crust and upper mantle.
Asthenosphere The upper layer of the earth's mantle, below the lithosphere.
Transform boundary A transform boundary is a plate boundary where the motion is predominantly horizontal.
Seafloor spreading Seafloor spreading is a process that occurs at mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is formed through volcanic activity and then gradually moves away from the ridge.
Convergent boundary A convergent boundary is an area on Earth where two or more lithospheric plates collide.
Divergent boundary a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary is a linear feature that exists between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.
Rift valley A large elongated depression with steep walls formed by the downward displacement of a block of the earth's surface between nearly parallel faults or fault systems.
Subduction Subduction is a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of tectonic plates where one plate moves under another and is forced to sink.
Convection current A current in a fluid that results from convection.
Continental Drift Theory Continental drift is the theory that the Earth's continents have moved over geologic time relative to each other.
Trench A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground that is generally deeper than it is wide
Oceanic basin an oceanic basin may be anywhere on Earth that is covered by seawater but geologically ocean basins are large geologic basins that are below sea level.
Hotspot In geology, the places known as hotspots or hot spots are volcanic regions thought to be fed by underlying mantle that is anomalously hot compared with the surrounding mantle.
Mid-ocean ridge A mid-ocean ridge is a seafloor mountain system formed by plate tectonics.
Ring of fire The Ring of Fire is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
