Plate tectonics
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Asthenosphere | Sphere in the mantle that contributes to convention |
| Subduction | the movement of plates into the mantle |
| Seafloor spreading | the slow and continuous creation of new oceanic crust |
| Mantle convention | the process of mantle cooling and sinking, only to heat and rise creating currents. |
| Slab pull | the idea that convention is the driving force behind the pulling down of plates |
| Ridge push | Mantle escaping and pushing away of plates is another force of motion |
| Lava | When magma escapes the subduction layer |
| Magma | Lava in the subduction layer |
| Tectonic plates | giant slabs of continental or oceanic crust that move |
| Theory of continental drift | The idea all the continents were once together, but drifted away. |
| Convergent | The tectonic plates moving together. |
| Divergent | Moving away |
| Transform | rubbing against each other |
| Hot spot | where rocks melt to form magma |
| Epicenter | where the earthquake comes from |
| focus | where rocks break |
| Pangea | The super continent formed of all the continents |
| Geohazard | A place where there is a huge risk of injury or death due to geological features |
| Reverse fault | When instead of being thrust down, the land is thrust up. |
| Strike-slip faut | the land is shifted to the side |
| Fault | the land is shifted down |
| Compression | When the rocks are stressed and push against each other |
| Tension | When two rocks stretch in different directions |
| Shear | stress parallel to something |
| Felsic | Igneous rocks rich in elements |
| Mafic | Igneous rock with lots of iron and magnesium |
