Ch. 6-Lesson 1-4

Lesson 1-4: Ecosystems

What are the two factors that describe organisms and habitats? Biotic (organisms) Abiotic (Air, water, soil, temperature, & sunlight)
What is a habitat to an organism? A place that provides all the things an organism needs.
What is a population? The group of organisms of one species that live in that area in the same time.
Name (9) types of ecosystems that exist in the world? Coral Reef, Desert, Tropical Rain Forest, Tundra, Taiga, Mixed Forest, Prairie, & Coastal Wetland
What is a niche in a habitat? A role that an animal or plant has in a particular area of its ecosystem
What are the factors (7) that limit the capacity of an organism? Food, Water, Space, Shelter, Diseases, Predators, & Life cycle duration
What is called when both plants and animals live and need each other to survive called? Interaction
What are plants classified as in an ecosystem? Producers
What are living animals classified as in an ecosystem? Consumers
What process is it called when either plants or animals return to the beginning? End process
What are the organisms that breakdown plants or animals to begin the first stage of survival called? Decomposers
What is defined as a series of steps that involve energy transfer from one organism to another? Food Chain
What are the 3 things that plants compete for to survive? Sunlight, soil, and water
What are specific living areas to both plants and animals known as? Environments
What 4 environmental factors effect an area for plants or animals? Temperatures, locations, air qualities, or even evaluations
What speeds are environments made or created in the Earth? Changes in the environment are slow or fast
What 2 organisms exist in an environment? Plants or Animals
What 4 changes are said to have a major effects to an environment? Sunlight, water, temperatures, or the competitions for survival
What 2 ideas can make changes in an ecosystem’s structure? Temperatures & Plants or animal evolving to survive
What is a long-term relationship where one organism helps another? Symbiosis
What are bad for organisms that weaken or kill their host because they depend on them to feed? Parasites
What is the definition of pollution? Any unwanted substances added to the land, water, or air that causes problems to an environment
Pollutions have been ranged as what in the world today? Plastics, waste water products, factory trash, and many other forms created by human origins
What are the 3 areas that pollutions have been known to effect environments? Air, Land, & Sea
In two ways, how can new plants or animals from different ecosystems effect new ecosystems they don’t belong to? A) They can over populate the area and destroy the ecosystem B) They can die because they cannot survive the new changes to a different environment.
What are the 4 issues that plants or animals have that cause them to die in a new environment? Different temperatures, Food sources, Predators, and water contents
What is the definition of a poacher? It is someone who breaks the law by illegally hunting animals or fishing areas that they are not allowed to
What are the 2 main problems that cause animals to be killed for “Black Market” profits? Poachers and Bad Governments
What is been done to stop illegal poaching in the world? New rules and laws that are setup by good governments.
What is the definition to conservation? An attempt to preserve or protect an environment from harmful changes.
What is biotic in an environment? Organisms that are alive in an environment
What is abiotic in an environment? Things that are not alive in an environment
