Currents,Waves,Tides

TermDefinition
Currents A large stream of moving water that flows through the ocean
Tsunami Waves that form when a large volume of ocean water is suddenly moved up or down
Storm Surge A local rise in sea level near the shore that is caused by strong winds from a storm
Neap Tide When the Sun, Earth, and moon form a 90 angle
Coriolis Effect The apparent curving of moving objects from a straight path due to Earth’s rotation
Upwelling Process in which cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep ocean rises to the deep ocean rises to the surface and replaces warm surface water
Tidal Bore Body of water that rushes up through a narrow bay during the rise of high tide and causes a very sudden tidal rise
Wavelength Distance between two adjacent wave crests or wave troughs
Wave Energy carried through water
Trough The lowest point of the wave
Undertow Carries sand and pieces of rock away from the shore
Surface Currents Horizontal, streamlike movements of water at or near the surface of the ocean
Tide Daily changes in the level of ocean water
Deep Currents Streamlike movement of ocean water located far below the surface
Swell Rolling waves the moves steadily across the ocean
Longshore Current Water moves in a current parallel to the shoreline, close to the shore; causes the sand to the shore; causes the sand to move in a zigzag pattern
Tidal Range The difference between levels of ocean water at high tide and low tide
Spring Tide Tides with the largest daily tidal range and occur during the new and full moons, or every 14 days
Crest The highest point of the wave
Wave height Vertical distance between the crest and trough of the wave
High Tide The bulges that form in the oceans because of the moon’s pull causes this
El Niño Every 2 to 12 years, the South Pacific trade winds move less warm water to the western Pacific than usual
La Niña Happens when surface-water temperatures in the Eastern Pacific become unusually cool
Low Tide Water level is lower than average sea level
