Anna Soignoli unit 3
Plate tectonics (unit 3 vocab)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Asthenosphere | Highest layer on the earths mantle, but still lower than the lithosphere |
| Subduction | Process where two tectonics plates collide |
| Seafloor spreading | Theory that the oceanic crust was created at the ocean ridges |
| Mantle convection | Convection currents in the mantle that are thought to be the main cause of plate movements |
| Ridge push | process connected to convection currents in the earths mantle , occurs when the weight of a elevated ridge pushes an oceanic plate towards a subsection |
| Slab pull | Tectonic process involved with convection currents, occurs when the weight of a subduction plate pulls the lithosphere into a subduction zone |
| Lava | Magma flowing onto the earths surface |
| Magma | molten rock below the earths surface |
| Tectonic plates | pieces of the crust that covers the earths surface |
| Theory of continental drift | Wegeners theory that earths continent were once one big super continent called Pangea |
| Convergent boundary | place where two tectonic plates will move toward each other |
| Divergent boundary | where two of earths tectonic plates will moving apart |
| Transform boundary | Place where two tectonic plates end up sliding horizontally away from each other |
| Hot spot | A hot area in the earths mantle |
| Epicenter(in regards to earthquakes) | Point on Earths surface directly above the focus of an earthquake |
| Focus(in regards to earthquakes) | point of the initial fault rupture where an earthquake originates |
| Pangaea | A landmass made up of all the continents that had supposedly began to break up around 200million years ago |
| Geo hazard | Geological dangers that may cause changes to the Earth's surface |
| Reverse fault | Formed by vertical and horizontal compression, it causes a vertical movement upwards along a fault plane |
| Strike-slip fault | Caused by horizontal shear that causes horizontal movement along a fault plane |
| Normal fault | Its tension causes vertical movement downwards along a fault plane |
| Compression | Stress that decreases the volume of a material |
| Tension | Stress that pulls a material apart |
| Shearing | Stress that causes a material to twist |
| Felsic | Light colored igneous rock |
| Mafic | Dark Colored igneous rock that are made of more lighter elements that are more buoyant |
